Burning from the Inside – Bauhaus
Ah Bauhaus; the goth’s version of the Beatles. Some argue that without Bauhaus, there would be no Goth. No Emo. No shoe gazing. Some argue that without Bauhaus, Bella Lugosi would still be alive. Some argue just for the sake of it.
In my search for all things goth, a genre which bypassed me due to lack of influence from my contemporaries, I looked for music associated with the black wearing, pale faced youth culture of the 1980s and 1990s in an attempt to catch up with things I missed.
Being introduced to the genre in the mid-to-late 90s by way of Dead Can Dance and Fields of the Nephilim through Ginger Chris and Min, I developed the thirst to catch up with the several years of music I had missed out on, reaching its height when I was in my early 30s.
Researching the genre, it was suggested to me that Bauhaus were the original goth band, releasing in 1979, the single Bella Lugosi’s Dead. Of course, being a hipster, I immediately recognised that this was actually a load of old tosh, with the best goth stuff coming out in the early 1970s, like Lucifer’s Black Mass.
Burning from the Inside is the fifth studio album from Bauhaus. While probably not as groundbreaking as their single, Bella Lugosi’s Dead, it does feature a couple of songs that I am fond of. It is the first of two Bauhaus albums I have, the second being a best of compilation.
