Stegzy's Music Project

A commentary on Stegzy's album collection

About

Music the great uniter

Towards the end of 2012 I took stock of my CD and MP3 collection and realised that I hadn’t actually listened to everything in it. That had to change.  There I was, massive library of music and I had only listened to a fraction of it.

Calculations showed that I had over 182 Gigabytes of music on my hard drive. That worked out as approximately 93 days of solid 24 hour listening of music. I wasn’t going to be able to keep that up for long. Nor was I going to be able to remember them all! So I started the project over on my Livejournal. I then started cross posting to the Compostual Existentialist, my other WordPress blog.

It wasn’t long before I realised that not all long term readers would want to read about my music collection. So I put it here instead. Where you, dear reader, have stumbled across it. However, as anyone who has lived will tell you, things – especially long term things – never go smoothly. In May 2016 I had a major shift in career resulting in a dramatic change in social media habits and a year passed before I could post again. The malaise did not fade. The social media landscape changed, peoples consumption of media changed, access to music shifted and audiences opted for an easier method for their dopamine – scrolling. A month passed and by June 2017 so did my enthusiasm – as further changes in personal situations arose – middle age hit and really, I just didnt feel like interacting with people on line. The site went on hiatus.

It wasn’t for long. 2018 had a good run with updates taking a break from August that year but not resuming until 2020 when pretty much everyone discovered blogging, content creation and COVID19 lockdowns. Unfortunately this lasted only a month before yet more breaks in service caused by:

  • upgraded PCs
  • bodged music transfers
  • More changes in work/life
  • the loss of a backup hard drive
  • A failed attempt at turning this into a substack
  • Changes in music service providers
  • Changes by said music service providers to music libraries without permission
  • A major 7000 track mistag fuckup of epic proportions lasting about a year to resolve on the eve of a relaunch of the site in 2025.

But please, stay tuned. Stay and share a musical journey with me as I attempt to listen to over 1800 albums of music, some good, some bad. Some with memories attached, others I’ve never heard before. Some I forgot I had. Some I’ve added to the library since beginning the project in 2013.

Join me. Follow this musical project, listen along and, better still, share your opinions. It’s going to be a long (and probably lonely) journey.
