By the time I became addicted to Morphine, it was too late. Mark Sandman had died of a heart attack and the band had been dissolved. Such a shame.
The band, like so many that feature on my music project, have a unique and unusual sound. Sleazy with a touch of rock and a tiny speck of funk. Delicious rich lo-fi tones, enhanced by shady lyrics. The kind of music that wouldn’t be out of place in a smokey wooden shack bar in the Everglades or some swampy remote part of southern North America. Complete with alligators and those boats with the big fans on the back.
Morphine enjoyed growing success right up to the untimely death of their lead singer, Mark Sandman and even had a number of their songs feature on the soundtrack for kissy girl film Wild Things.
Something about Morphine makes you feel dirty in a naughty way. Cure for Pain is their difficult second album. Difficult as in it was difficult for me to find a copy in the UK. But then that’s part and parcel of my music tastes; few things I like have ever been available in HMV. However, it is an easy album to get into and, if you want to have a night swim with the band, then this is probably a good starting place. Their follow up album Yes won’t feature on this project for some years yet so give them a try now.
