Stegzy's Music Project

A commentary on Stegzy's album collection

DOM – Joachim Witt [#382]

DOM - Joachim WittGerman new wave rock star Joachim Witt emerged onto the world stage roughly around the same time as Falco but it wasn’t until the nineties when his hit Die Flutt was rereleased as a duet with Peter Heppner that his international recognition was ignited.

Witt has appeared on the Music Project once before with his best of compilation album Auf Ewig and his eighth album Bayreuth 1 and I’ve already hinted that the only reason I had any of these albums was because of Die Flutt. But DOM is included in the collection purely because of the song Gloria which I came across when trying to find one of Witt’s music videos.

Sadly, this is the last time Witt appears in the Music Project on his own, later appearances are purely due to his inclusion in compilations. While Eurorock continues to run a vein through the mine of my music collection with German and Austrian artists appearing like nuggets of growly goodness, the genre and style which Witt is a part of is certainly one I would like to explore further. But here is the other song I like by Witt a cover version of the song  Battalion d’Amour by East German band Silly.

#126 – Bayreuth 1 – Joachim Witt

Bayreuth Eins Bayreuth 1 – Joachim Witt

It’s that German chap again. This time he’s here with his eighth album from 1998.

In the time before Rammstein, when Euro pop was something shunned by Brit landers as mistakenly being akin to the plinky plonky fizzy pop churned out annually during the Eurovision Song Contest, there existed a subculture of hard core Euro rockers who were slowly infiltrating the UK pop scene. Mr Witt led that vanguard with this album.

There are some good tunes on this album but my favourite, and the only reason I have this album, is the Peter Heppner collaboration Die Flut.

#106 – Auf Ewig – Joachim Witt

Album artAuf Ewig – Joachim Witt

German pensioner Rocker Joachim Witt is one of those rock stars all the old rock stars want to emulate. Nonchalance, no guitar wanking or face contorting, just nonchalance and an air of cool that would make Bryan Ferry feel a bit of a knob head. Thats Joachim Witt.

I came across Witt a few years ago while looking for some Euro pop. Of course, he’s been around since before Elvis learnt about burgers being tasty, which is fairly good all things considered. I vaguely remember a couple of Witt tracks appearing in the tail end of the Top 40 way back when.

Auf Ewig is nothing to do with earwigs, it is the best of Witt. Which I always think is a bit like drawing a line across your work and saying anything that follows is not the best of. Anyway, this IS the best of. All in one album. Typically, there are a number of tracks that are good, and a number which I wish I’d never heard.
