Cammell Lairds Social ClubCammel Laird Social Club – Half Man Half Biscuit

Cammell Laird Social Club  is possibly one of my most favourite albums. Not only is it a sly dig at Buena Vista Social Club but it’s possibly the finest bit of musical wit and whimsy that has ever existed.

One day, someone will read this blog and think “Hey, you know what? I’m gonna try some of this weird music myself”. I sincerely hope that whenever that person comes across this entry to the project, they’ll seek out this album and give it a go.

Cammell Lairds, for those not in the know, was a ship builders based on the banks of the River Mersey in the UK, an area where the boys that make up the band lived and, probably still do. Several references are made within the songs to the rising pomposity that has plagued the peaceful Cheshire plains as neuvo riche  continued to invade the area. There are a few sports related songs, most notably Referees Alphabet and there are some really good observational lyrics, as expected, from Nigel Blackwell.
